During Project One, I was required to write a technical report about one challenge from the article ‘ 50 Major Challenges of the 21st Century’ published by BBC. Once I made my selection, I had to research the topic and create a bibliography. I was required to convey information I found to an expert audience within my Technical Report. This was very enlightening, not only because I discovered new information I did not know prior, but also because I had to convey it differently than I was used to. I had to create a cover letter, and executive summary and condense my findings within the body of the report to ensure all key information was communicated in a concise manner, all while researching the entire report by myself. Since every report I have done in the past has referenced a specific topic, I was not used to creating an outline to the degree I was required to for my technical report. This was my favourite part of ENG 2003, as it aided my understanding of holistic research and creative thinking.

While preparing this report I truly experienced a feeling of being outside of my comfort zone. Writing the report and editing it constantly, adding new information and changing what I had to adapt to new research was truly challenging and made me learn how to research better. As a result of this exercise, I am more efficient in researching and formulating problem statements.

I will be able to use this skill to make reports and presentations in the future. My learnings from this report will be especially helpful for technical reports which will be an essential part of my future. Since this manner of crafting reports is very common in business settings and required for high-quality outputs, I am confident that this exercise developed my writing acumen to a new standard.

Through my degree, this exercise was the most developmental thus far and as such, I have selected this project to be my showcase for my portfolio. This exercise shows all the experience I have crafting documents, designs and research all the while displaying my problem-solving and creative skills. This piece can be better, however, as I feel I did not find everything I could with the time I was given. For future projects of this sort, I will spend more time on the research portion to ensure I am even more confident in my findings.
