My name is Nima Nojavan, and I am a third-year Civil Engineering Student at York University, expecting to graduate in Apr 2027. My most relevant utility is my ability to connect with people deeply, which fuels my willingness and capability to negotiate favourable outcomes for people, projects, and more. I like sports and take initiative by staying active consistently throughout the week. My constant engagement in physical activity reinforces my alignment with my core values which are made up of upholding commitments, acting fairly, and exercising care and due diligence.

While I have lived in Canada for approximately 80% of my life, I was born in Iran and grew up in a mixed environment (i.e. Turkish and Farsi). My exposure to various experiences, including immigrating to Canada and adopting new ways of living, has rendered me curious, highly adaptable and resilient. Most of my childhood growing up was spent in engineering offices as my father and uncles were all civil engineers. The exposure I had to business as a child developed me into a business-oriented teenager and I constantly found myself involved in entrepreneurial activities throughout my teenage years, such as freelance work. My passion for business and engineering inspired me to pursue Civil Engineering and Real Estate Development.

As my first act toward my goal, I decided to study Life Sciences at McMaster University to get a better understanding of the basis of all literature and research methods. Throughout my time in McMaster, I involved myself in the Real Estate industry as a marketing consultant as my second step towards my ultimate goal. I graduated Life Sciences in 2022 and started studying Engineering at the Lassonde School for Engineering at York University, which was my third step towards becoming involved in Real Estate Development. I am currently focused on learning engineering concepts and connecting with members of both the Engineering and Real Estate community through various means.

I would consider the most influential teacher I have ever had throughout my development to be life. Life has taught me all that I know and the primary reason why I consider it as the best teacher is due to the inherent absence of bias in its teachings. Life is brutal and tough, and as humans, we have to accept that our actions have consequences. This attribute of toughness has, and will continue to, inspire my core values which are made up of upholding commitments, acting fairly, and exercising care and due diligence.

When I think about my future as an engineer, I am inspired to grow and learn new modes of problem-solving. I feel this way due to my deep desire to bring other engineers together and build a team around solving some of the most controversial problems humans face. To this end, I believe my time is best spent learning new techniques and exercising my ability to problem-solve in the real world. This means being outside of my comfort zone as much as possible for the next couple of years and adapting to this discomfort by way of learning and growing constantly.

My view on engineering differs slightly from the norm. The responsibilities I assume as an engineer and the services I hope to render fall outside of the conventional scope of engineering practice. I want to change the landscape of real estate in meaningful ways, creating infrastructure that is not only of higher quality but also sustainable and economic. My ultimate goal is to serve my community by providing affordable housing for the next generation, so we can all share in the same innate right we all, as humans, have to housing and the securities that come with it.

The future I envision for my community is one where we are all granted the luxury of housing and can therefore focus on thriving, rather than surviving. With this approach, I believe we will all become effective producers and increase the quality of life for ourselves and others in our community. The image that I often hold in my mind with respect to this goal is a group of people satisfied and happy, even through inevitable difficulties. Communities that face problems with great strength and resilience because they know they are supported and heard.
